Pedestrian Accidents in California
Thousands of people in Southern California are left with significant injuries as a result of automobile accidents. Unfortunately, we see many people hospitalized with traumatic brain injuries, internal organ injuries, and severe compound fractures. No matter how safe you are while traveling along our roadways, you cannot prevent others from engaging in acts of negligence. Regrettably, nearly four out of every five crashes take place as a result of driver error. Some of the leading causes of car crashes in our state include:
- Distracted driving: Distracted driving is the leading cause of pedestrian-related car accidents. When drivers divert their attention from the road—whether by using their cell phones, adjusting the radio, or engaging with other passengers—they become significantly more likely to overlook pedestrians crossing the street. This lack of attention can have devastating consequences, especially in busy areas or crosswalks where pedestrians are more vulnerable. Distracted drivers may fail to stop at red lights, crosswalks, or yield signs, putting the lives of pedestrians in immediate danger.
- Drunk driving: Drunk driving is a major factor in fatal pedestrian accidents. Drivers impaired by alcohol are less likely to notice pedestrians, react appropriately to changing traffic conditions, or obey traffic laws such as stopping for crosswalks. This is particularly dangerous at night when visibility is already reduced. Drunk drivers may fail to see pedestrians in time to stop or slow down, resulting in tragic accidents. The reckless and unpredictable nature of drunk driving makes it a leading threat to pedestrian safety.
- Speeding: Speeding significantly increases the risk of pedestrian accidents. Drivers who exceed the speed limit have less time to react to pedestrians crossing the road, especially in school zones, residential areas, or urban streets. When a car is speeding, it also takes longer to stop, making it more difficult to avoid a collision if a pedestrian suddenly enters the roadway. Additionally, speeding makes any accident more severe, leading to greater injuries or fatalities, particularly for pedestrians who have little protection compared to vehicle occupants.
Following your accident, you may have legal options available to help you move forward. You should seek the assistance of a Los Angeles pedestrian accident lawyer right away. Filing a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who caused you harm can help you recover financial compensation for medical costs and a variety of other damages that you face.
