Sun Valley, CA – Truck Crashes w/ Three Vehicles on 5 Fwy
Sun Valley, CA (March 3, 2025) – A semi-truck crash involving three other vehicles led to significant traffic delays on the southbound 5 Freeway in Sun Valley on Saturday night, March 1.
The California Highway Patrol received reports of the accident near the Lankershim Boulevard off-ramp at approximately 9:10 p.m. Authorities responded quickly, issuing a SigAlert and shutting down all southbound lanes, causing traffic to come to a standstill.
Emergency personnel worked swiftly to clear the wreckage. The HOV lane and two additional lanes were reopened about 30 minutes after the crash, helping to ease congestion. By 10:30 p.m., all lanes were reopened. At least one individual was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The severity of injuries remains unclear at this time. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims, and we hope for their full and timely recovery.
Truck Accidents in California
California’s highways are some of the busiest in the country, and accidents involving large trucks are all too common. In recent years, the state has seen a rise in truck-related crashes, with thousands of collisions occurring annually. Due to the sheer size and weight of commercial trucks, these accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities.
Truck accidents can occur for a variety of reasons. Below are some of the most common causes:
- Driver Fatigue: Truck drivers often spend long hours on the road, increasing the risk of drowsy driving. Federal regulations exist to limit driving hours, but fatigue remains a leading factor in many truck crashes.
- Brake Failures and Mechanical Issues: Poor maintenance and defective parts can lead to critical system failures, making it difficult for drivers to control their trucks.
- Blind Spot Collisions: Large commercial trucks have substantial blind spots that make it challenging for drivers to see smaller vehicles around them, leading to dangerous lane-change accidents.
- Speeding and Reckless Driving: When truck drivers exceed speed limits or drive aggressively, stopping in time to avoid collisions becomes much harder, especially on highways.
- Improper Cargo Loading: Incorrectly secured cargo can shift in transit, causing the truck to become unbalanced and increasing the risk of rollovers or jackknife incidents.
