Pomona, CA - Wrong-Way Crash on 60 Fwy Kills 2, Injures Infant
Pomona, CA (March 24, 2025) - Two families are reeling after a tragic collision on the 60 Freeway late Sunday night claimed the lives of two women and left a baby with major injuries.
The deadly crash happened around 11:00 p.m. on March 23, when 24-year-old Rick Rodriguez of Pomona reportedly drove the wrong way on the westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway, just west of Reservoir St. Authorities say Rodriguez's vehicle slammed head-on into a Honda Civic carrying three people.
Inside the Civic were a 29-year-old woman, believed to be the driver, a 39-year-old female passenger, and a 1-year-old child. Authorities confirmed that both women died from their injuries at the scene. The infant was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Following the initial impact, Rodriguez’s vehicle spun and collided with another car, resulting in minor injuries to a person in that second vehicle. Rodriguez himself was hospitalized with severe injuries and has since been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, according to the California Highway Patrol. Several lanes of the freeway were shut down for more than six hours overnight while investigators processed the scene and emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage.
Our sympathies go out to the families of the victims who lost their lives in this accident. We also hope those injured in this accident recover quickly.
Wrong-Way Accidents in California
Wrong-way crashes in California are among the most fatal incidents on the road. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, alcohol and drug impairment often plays a significant role in these head-on collisions. In recent years, fatal wrong-way crashes have surged statewide.
Here’s what often contributes to the tragedy of wrong-way crashes:
- Impaired Driving: A large percentage of wrong-way collisions involve drivers under the influence. Alcohol and drug impairment can severely limit a person’s ability to recognize traffic flow and road signage, leading to dangerous outcomes on highways and interstates.
- Nighttime Driving: Wrong-way incidents happen most often during nighttime hours when visibility is low and drivers may be less alert. Reduced lighting increases the chance of missing critical signs or road markers, especially in high-speed zones.
- Lack of Proper Signage: Intersections or ramps without clearly visible “Wrong Way” or “Do Not Enter” signs can confuse drivers unfamiliar with the area. Poor design or maintenance can increase the risk of such accidents, particularly in urban areas with complex interchanges.
- Driver Age and Inexperience: Studies show that elderly or very inexperienced drivers are more likely to drive the wrong way. Slower reaction times and unfamiliarity with traffic rules can be contributing factors in such collisions.
- Highway Design Flaws: Road layouts with poorly marked entrance and exit ramps can result in wrong-way entries. Improving ramp design and adding reflective markers or motion-sensing lights are steps being taken in parts of California to prevent this.
