Pacoima, CA – One Killed in Crash Involving LAFD Fire Engine on Terra Bella St
Pacoima, CA (March 31, 2025) - A collision involving a Los Angeles Fire Department engine and a civilian vehicle claimed a life late Sunday morning in the Pacoima neighborhood.
The incident unfolded around 10:45 a.m. on March 30 at the intersection of Terra Bella Street and San Fernando Road, just outside Whiteman Airport. Authorities say a fire engine was responding to an emergency when it collided with a civilian vehicle at the busy junction. The vehicle’s sole occupant was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, the individual was later pronounced dead. Their identity has not yet been made public, as officials work to notify the family.
Two firefighters aboard the LAFD engine sustained injuries during the crash. Fortunately, their wounds were described as non-life-threatening, and they were taken to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. The crash left the intersection temporarily shut down as investigators assessed the scene and cleared the wreckage. The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation, and officials have not stated whether the fire engine had its sirens or lights activated at the time of the crash.
We hope those injured in this accident recover quickly, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
Fire Truck Accidents in California
Fire engine collisions are rare but can be particularly dangerous due to the size and weight of emergency vehicles. In California, fatal traffic crashes claimed 4,407 lives in 2022 alone, according to state data. Accidents involving emergency response vehicles, while not as common, still raise unique legal and safety concerns.
As families and survivors seek answers after these types of incidents, understanding the risks and outcomes of fire truck accidents is important. Below are some common injuries that may result from these crashes:
- Blunt Force Trauma: Fire engines can weigh over 40,000 pounds. When they collide with smaller passenger vehicles, the force of impact can lead to internal injuries, fractured ribs, and head trauma. These types of injuries often require extensive medical intervention.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: Victims involved in high-impact crashes may suffer damage to the spine. This can range from herniated discs to permanent paralysis. Rehabilitation for spinal injuries can be long and emotionally taxing.
- Burn Injuries: Although less common, fire truck collisions can cause fires or explosions due to fuel leakage. Burn injuries may require surgeries, skin grafts, and long-term care.
- Broken Bones: The sheer force of a crash can lead to broken legs, arms, and pelvises. Recovery can take months and sometimes require physical therapy or surgery.
If you or someone you love has been hurt in a collision with a fire truck or any emergency vehicle, reach out to a qualified Los Angeles wrongful death attorney as soon as possible. When government agencies are involved, filing deadlines may be much shorter, and the claims process can be more complex. Legal guidance is crucial to ensure you’re not left footing the bill for something that wasn’t your fault.
